Postdoctoral Clinical Psychology Residency with an Emphasis in Clinical Health Psychology and
Primary Care

The VA New York Harbor Healthcare System, Manhattan campus, is pleased to offer a one-year postdoctoral residency in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in Clinical Health Psychology and Primary Care. This residency is based primarily within Primary Care and integrates with the Patient-Centered Medical Home care model. The intent of the training program is to further the resident’s clinical and professional growth both as a clinical psychologist and as a specialist within the emphasis area of clinical health psychology.
The postdoctoral residency consists of a combination of year-long required assignments and briefer rotations, generally lasting 4 months each, some required and some elective. The resident has the opportunity to extend one or more rotations if that area represents a major interest. Responsibilities will include evaluation and assessment; individual and group therapies; team participation and consultation; didactics; teaching and supervision; and a year-long residency project.
A partial list of training, consultation, and didactic opportunities includes the following:
▪ Evidence-based treatments for clinical intervention within the Primary Care setting (e.g., cognitive behavioral, interpersonal therapy approaches; motivational interviewing/enhancement; problem-solving treatment; behavioral activation).
▪ Specialized treatment interventions (e.g., smoking cessation, sleep hygiene, weight loss, cognitive behavioral therapy for pain, biofeedback, mindfulness- and acceptance & commitment-based approaches).
▪ Group modalities within the Primary Care setting (e.g. psychoeducational, supportive, psychotherapeutic).
▪ Conducting brief (“same-day triage”) and full psychological evaluations appropriate to the Primary Care setting.
▪ Specialized psychological evaluations (organ replacement, bariatric surgery, interferon therapy for hepatitis).
▪ Consulting and contributing a mental health perspective through participation in Patient-Centered Medical Home team meetings, “curbside” consultation with medical providers, and shared visits with medical providers.
▪ In addition to Primary Care, other rotations include: Chronic Pain Clinic, Psychiatry inpatient consultation/liaison team, and Primary Care substance abuse treatment, plus a number of elective assignments.
▪ Teaching and supervision through in-service training to Medical Home team, teaching 2-3 intern seminars, and supervising a junior trainee (intern or extern).
▪ Research-related Residency Project (e.g., small empirical investigation such as outcome study, literature review, performance improvement project, needs assessment, program evaluation).
▪ Collaborate with the VISN-3 Mental Health Lead for Patient-Centered Care for a more “macro” viewpoint regarding program development, implementation, and coordination on a regional scale.
Postdoctoral Residency Details
Start Date: On or about September 1 (depending upon pay period dates) for a 12-month appointment.
Stipend: $47,626
Benefits: Health insurance, 10 Federal holidays, 13 days paid vacation and up to 13 days of sick leave; up to 5 days approved absence to attend outside conferences and trainings.
Applications are due January 6, 2012. Interviews take place late January through February.

Requirements
U.S. citizens who are candidates in or have completed an APA-accredited doctoral program in clinical/counseling psychology and who are enrolled in or have completed an APA-accredited internship are eligible to apply. All doctoral degree requirements, including internship and dissertation defense, must be completed prior to beginning the fellowship. Preference is given to candidates with prior training and experience in Health Psychology, but it is not a requirement.
