The Department of Neuropsychology at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta and Emory University School of Medicine are happy to announce one opening for a postdoctoral resident for 2012-2014, beginning September 1, 2012. Our training program is a member of the Association of Postdoctoral Programs in Clinical Neuropsychology (APPCN) and is designed to meet criteria set forth by the Houston Conference Policy Statement. Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta operates 3 hospitals and the Marcus Institute for Autism and also has 17 satellite locations throughout Atlanta. Children’s Pediatric Neuropsychology Residency program builds competency in the neuropsychological assessment and treatment of children (newborn to adult) with a wide variety of neurological and developmental disorders.

Upon completion of the two-year, full-time program, participants will have gained clinical and research skills required for independent practice and/or academic pursuits in pediatric neuropsychology and to pursue board certification (ABBP/CN). The areas of training consist of interdisciplinary involvement in our CARF-Accredited inpatient and partial-day rehabilitation for acquired brain injury and medical disorders that affect cognition and physical functioning; inpatient/outpatient epilepsy, including video-EEG monitoring, WADA and epilepsy surgery; outpatient epilepsy social support group; inpatient neuropsychological consultation; concussion evaluation and education; and outpatient evaluations. Treatment opportunities are offered through structured cognitive remediation sessions in attention, memory and problem-solving for children and adolescents, as well as short-term psychotherapy/education for inpatients and day treatment patients and their parents.

Residents are required to participate in and/or develop research topics and are encouraged to present at national meetings. Current faculty research interests include: learning/memory in children with epilepsy and traumatic brain injury, cognitive and family functioning in children with neuromuscular disorders, fMRI in children with frontal and temporal epilepsy, and the effectiveness of cognitive remediation with children with neurological disorders. New research projects are ongoing and will soon include treatment efficacy and imaging studies. Opportunities are also available for the resident to assist in supervision of predoctoral interns and externs, in didactic and clinical situations. The Department of Neuropsychology consists of nine neuropsychologists, two of whom are ABPP-CN boarded, seven of whom are in progress in the boarding process, and all of whom are adjunct professors in The Emory University School of Medicine and Morehouse University School of Medicine, three postdoctoral fellows, , three predoctoral interns in an APA-Approved clinical neuropsychology life-span internship program in collaboration with Emory University School of Medicine, and externs from local universities. Didactic opportunities exist within the department and with Emory University School of Medicine on a weekly basis.

Approximately 75% of the resident’s time is devoted to clinical activities, and 25% to research and education. Residents receive a salary of $38,140 and Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta employee benefit package. Residents receive 15 days of paid time off, as well as 6 regular holidays.
