Fellows receive faculty appointments through the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. HMC is the primary provider of subspecialty care in the region. Additionally, HMC is also one of three hospitals within the Consortium for Advanced Psychology Training, an APA accredited fellowship in Clinical Health Psychology. HMC is currently seeking APA accreditation for the fellowship in Rehabilitation Psychology.
While the primary training emphasis for this position is of a pediatric nature, the fellow will also have regular exposure to treatment and assessment of adults on inpatient rehabilitation and general medical units. Pediatric opportunities span acute/ICU, inpatient brain injury rehabilitation and outpatient services that facilitate the development of skills in assessment and treatment of children and adolescents with a variety of acquired neurological and developmental disorders. The Rehabilitation Psychology program receives referrals from numerous medical services such as: trauma/surgery, neurology, neurosurgery, physical medicine and rehabilitation, pediatrics, and hematology/oncology. Outpatient referrals are generated from inpatient services as part of a continuum of care, as well as community pediatricians, psychiatrists, nurse-case managers, and other community sources. In addition to didactics specific to rehabilitation and neuropsychology, fellows participate in a core health psychology postdoctoral curriculum that provides broad education and training in areas pertinent to psychology practice (e.g., psychopharmacology, health/medical psychology, medical education). The focus of this fellowship is on clinical training; however, research opportunities are available through collaboration with various subspecialty departments.
Candidates must have completed all requirements for their doctoral degree prior to the start of the fellowship program and must be eligible for a limited license to practice psychology within the state of Michigan. Preference will be given to candidates who have graduated from an APA/CPA-accredited doctoral program and predoctoral internship. Salary and benefits are highly competitive (PGY2 rate for current year was $48,929). The deadline for receipt of all application materials is January 15, 2012. Interviews will be arranged after initial screening of applications. Interviews can take place at the annual meeting of the International Neuropsychological Society. Additionally, onsite interviews can be arranged if necessary.
