The Department of Rehabilitation Medicine has a postdoctoral research fellowship funded by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in multiple sclerosis research. The fellowship’s objective is to train psychologists to become successful independent researchers in the field of multiple sclerosis (MS) rehabilitation research, with an emphasis on training researchers from rehabilitation psychology, clinical psychology, health psychology, or neuropsychology.
By the end of the fellowship, the fellow will have: (1) in-depth knowledge of a specific field of MS rehabilitation research (e.g., depression in MS, pain management, health promotion, symptom management, neuropsychology; outcome measurement); (2) grant writing skills; and (3) research dissemination skills (including both presentations and publications). The UW Dept. of Rehabilitation Medicine is home to the only Multiple Sclerosis Rehabilitation Research and Training Center (funded by NIDRR) and the Western Multiple Sclerosis Center and is affiliated with the MS Center of Excellence, Veterans Administration Puget Sound Health Care System.
The training will include: (1) mentorship from active MS researchers with expertise in a variety of areas within MS including chronic pain, depression, neuropsychology, exercise interventions, motivational interviewing, vocational intervention, outcome measurement, clinical trials methodology, and health services research; (2) participation in a variety of didactic training experiences as part of our larger postdoctoral training program (e.g., seminars, grant-writing workshops); and (3) clinical activities relevant to MS rehabilitation research (e.g., assessment, psychotherapy, neuropsychological assessment, consultation) up to a maximum of 20% of time and dependent upon the fellow’s goals and experience. The fellowship is for one to two years, depending on the trainee's goals.
Trainees often elect to complete a two year fellowship to allow sufficient
time to develop an area of MS rehabilitation research expertise.
To be considered, applicants’ psychology doctoral degrees must be from an APA accredited program. Applicants must also have a stated interest in a career in research. Experience in MS is not a prerequisite; we hope to recruit new investigators to the burgeoning and opportunity-rich area of MS research as a result of the fellowship. Please submit a CV, a statement of interest including career goals, and the names of three references to Dawn Ehde, PhD, at ehde@u.washington.edu. Please contact Dr. Ehde if you have questions regarding the fellowship. Salary is based on NIH postdoctoral salary levels and includes university benefits. The position will be available between July 1 and September 1 of 2012; the start date is negotiable.
The University of Washington is an affirmative action, equal opportunity employer building a culturally diverse faculty and staff and strongly encourages applications from women, minorities, individuals with disabilities and covered veterans.
