University of Virginia, Charlottesville, VA, USA - 1 Post-doctoral Resident in Psychology (Counseling and Psychological Services)

The post-doctoral fellowship is designed to further enhance the development of clinical, supervisory and administrative skills, as well as further the professional identity of emerging professionals who are particularly interested in pursuing university mental health careers. The program additionally aims to provide the Resident with the time and resources to develop specific clinical expertise in areas of their own interests. The resident will have the chance to work as a professional colleague with a highly dedicated, experienced staff that is deeply committed to training and professional career development. Training at CAPS focuses upon the application of brief and longer-term models of contemporary psychodynamic and cognitive theories to the understanding of psychological development, as well as the provision of clinical and consultative services. Noted strengths of our training include supervision in psychodynamic psychotherapy, group therapy, risk assessment, and brief intervention. In addition, as a member of a multidisciplinary treatment team, the resident benefits from the opportunity to further hone formulation skills in a collegial atmosphere that recognizes the complexity of human experience and values multiple clinical perspectives.

The resident’s clinical responsibilities include individual and group psychotherapy, brief screenings, clinical supervision of trainees, intake assessments, weekly emergency and consult services (ECS), night/weekend on-call (6 weeks), and outreach /consultation to the broader University community. The resident will also have the opportunity to participate in the full range of administrative tasks that occur at a university counseling center, including regular attendance at training committee and staff meetings. CAPS also serves as an APA-accredited training site for clinical psychology interns, UVa graduate practicum students and 4th year psychiatric residents from UVA School of Medicine. The resident will have the opportunity to supervise and facilitate trainee psychodynamic seminar meetings. The resident may also be a participant in didactic training offerings such as the brief therapy workshop. Qualifications, Application Procedures and Non-discrimination Policy Required Qualifications: Applicants must have all requirements completed from an APA accredited doctoral program in Clinical or Counseling Psychology prior to the start of the position on August 6th, 2012.

Preferred Qualifications: Prior experience in a university counseling center as an intern or practicum student is preferred. The successful candidate will have strong interpersonal skills, prior exposure to brief psychotherapy theory and technique, as well as experience with late adolescents and/or early adults.
