The VA in Albuquerque, NM, USA - 1 Postdoctoral residency Position

Now recruiting to fill one (1) two-year, full-time Post-Doctoral Residency in Clinical Neuropsychology. The position meets APA Division 40 / Houston Conference guidelines for postdoctoral training in Clinical Neuropsychology. The successful applicant will join one other neuropsychology resident who is currently completing the second year of the post-doctoral residency, as well as two post-doctoral residents with clinical emphasis on PTSD. Neuropsychology post-doctoral residents are offered training with the expectation that they will pursue ABPP board certification in clinical neuropsychology upon completion of the training program. Applicants for the Neuropsychology Postdoctoral Residency are expected to abide by those shared guidelines. Training Staff: Three full-time clinical neuropsychologists, two of whom are ABPP-CN (Rex M. Swanda, Ph.D., ABPP-CN; Joseph Sadek, Ph.D.; Kathleen Y. Haaland, Ph.D., ABPP-CN). Other psychology and medical faculty participate in training on elective rotations within Behavioral Health Care Line, Primary Care, Spinal Cord Injury, Neurology, Psychiatry, Family Medicine, and Geriatrics. Training Experiences: The residency offers a mix of clinical (75%) and education/research (25%) opportunities, with exposure to a broad spectrum of diagnoses within an ethnically diverse adult medical center population. The core training experiences revolve around advanced assessment interpretation and report writing, development of interventions, interdisciplinary consultation and communication, and opportunities for supervision with SCPPI interns, medical residents/fellows, and practicum trainees from UNM.

The primary training setting is the neuropsychological consultation service with out-patient and in-patient referrals. Common referral issues include traumatic brain injury, dementia, decisional capacity, and differential diagnosis of psychiatric and neurological contributions. Elective training in other settings is based on each resident's Individual Training Plan. Common electives include memory disorders clinic in Neurology, UNM Neuropsychology (adult and child), and BEACON team (psychiatric consultation and liaison). Residents also have opportunity for training in settings that include an OIF/OEF intake and assessment clinic, a 24-bed regional Spinal Cord Injury unit, and a number of outpatient primary care medical clinics. Didactic experiences include weekly Neuropsychology Rounds, with presentation and discussion of clinical cases, seminar presentations, fact-finding cases, and reviews of journal articles.

Neuropsychology residents will join other clinical and research postdoctoral residents in a Professional Development Seminar. Residents are also expected to attend clinical Grand Rounds in Neurology/Neurosurgery and Psychiatry as well as Neuroimaging and Neuropathology Conferences at our affiliated medical school (University of New Mexico School of Medicine) and MIND Institute. Research opportunities include collaboration with Kathleen Haaland, who focuses on neuroanatomical correlates of cognitive and motor abilities by studying focal lesion stroke patients. Joseph Sadek’s research uses performance-based functional measures and functional imaging to study the impact of vascular risk factors among patients with vascular and degenerative dementia. Training Location: This VA setting in Albuquerque, NM is a Dean’s Committee Hospital, and all of our Neuropsychology VA training faculty hold research or teaching faculty appointments at the University of New Mexico. With 27 full-time Psychologists on staff, psychology plays a key leadership role in the Behavioral Health Care Line (BHCL) as well as many of the programs throughout the medical center.

This VA setting provides a rich training environment, with other post-doctoral residency training in clinical (PTSD emphasis) and research, as well as the Southwest Consortium Predoctoral Psychology Internship (SCPPI), which offers unique cross-cultural training opportunities, and a practicum program with the University of New Mexico Clinical Psychology doctoral program. The current post-doctoral salaries are $42,239.00 for the first year and $44,529.00 for the second year.
