The Department of Psychology, Nationwide Children's Hospital and the Division of Psychology, Department of Pediatrics, The Ohio State University, has an opening for a postdoctoral resident in pediatric neuropsychology beginning September 2012. The training program belongs to the Association of Postdoctoral Programs in Clinical Neuropsychology (APPCN), and is therefore designed to meet the criteria set forth by the Houston Conference Policy Statement. The goal is to prepare the fellow for a career as a scientist-practitioner in pediatric neuropsychology.
The primary training site is Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, which houses the Department of Pediatrics of The Ohio State University (OSU). The hospital is the nation’s fifth largest children’s hospital. It is certified as a Level I trauma center and serves as the major pediatric referral center for south central Ohio, with a catchment area that extends into West Virginia and Kentucky. The Emergency Department is one of the busiest pediatric emergency facilities in the United States. The hospital serves many children with traumatic brain injuries each year. Post-acute care is often provided at the hospital's CARF-accredited Rehabilitation Unit.
The neuropsychology program also participates in pre-and post-epilepsy surgery evaluations.
The Pediatric Neuropsychology Program receives referrals from many different medical services, including neurology, neurosurgery, hematology/oncology, and physical medicine and rehabilitation, and from a variety of clinics for neurodevelopmental disorders. Referrals are also received from pediatricians in the community, as well as a variety of other community sources.
The Division of Psychology includes sixteen psychologists, all of whom hold academic appointments in the Department of Pediatrics in the OSU College of Medicine and Public Health. Four of the faculty are neuropsychologists. The division provides a wide array of inpatient and outpatient clinical services, and also supports active research programs. The division houses a predoctoral internship with tracks in pediatric neuropsychology and pediatric psychology that is accredited by the American Psychological Association. The division also supports a variety of postdoctoral residency programs.
The neuropsychology post-doctoral training program covers a period of 2 years, and consists of clinical, research, and educational activities.
Approximately 60% time is devoted to clinical service and supervision, 25-30% to educational activities, and 10-15% to research activity. Residents receive a salary of $38,496 in year 1 and $40,548 in year 2, as well as the Nationwide Children's Hospital employee benefit package, which includes health, dental, and vision insurance. Professional liability coverage is provided by the hospital. Residents receive 15 days of paid time off, as well as 6 regular holidays. Additional days are allocated for attendance at professional conferences and job interviews. OSU appointment entitles fellows to faculty privileges at OSU facilities, including athletic facilities and discount passes for OSU cultural events.
