The University of Michigan’s Institute for Human Adjustment is currently accepting applications for a clinical child and adolescent psychology postdoctoral fellowship position, to begin in August or Sept, 2012. This fellowship is rooted within the IHA’s University Center for the Child and Family, a multidisciplinary, training-focused, child/adolescent/family outpatient center. The training prepares fellows for licensure through a one year, full time program, with an option for a second year by mutual consent.
Advanced training is offered in many key professional competencies, including 1) assessment and diagnosis (including ADHD/LD and Autism-Spectrum diagnostic evaluation), 2) evidence-based psychotherapy interventions including individual, group, couples, and family therapy, and 3) clinical teaching and supervision. Infused throughout the fellowship are additional experiences in consultation and interdisciplinary collaboration, multicultural competencies, professional development, ethics, and leadership/administrative skills. Postdocs provide direct clinical service with supervision from expert clinicians, participate in a core curriculum of seminars and clinical conferences, develop supervision and teaching skills via work with trainees across multiple disciplines, consult with other professionals including our educational specialist and psychiatrist, and have opportunities to engage in community outreach and research collaborations. Many of our faculty have joint appointments in other areas of the University, with research programs focusing on depression, suicide prevention, and autism spectrum disorders. Other research collaborations between UCCF and the Departments of Psychology and Psychiatry focus on the neurobiology of depression and anxiety, children’s bereavement, and disruptive behavior disorders in youth.
UCCF favors an integrative clinical approach to case conceptualization, incorporating interpersonal, family systems, cognitive/behavioral, and biological/psychiatric elements, as well as an overall multicultural perspective. UCCF serves children and families from the university and surrounding communities, resulting in opportunities to serve a diverse array of children and families. Evidence-based interventions are emphasized and are tailored to the situations of individual families/clients. Particular faculty expertise lies in cognitive-behavioral interventions for youth depression and anxiety, parent behavior management training, emotion-regulation and mindfulness, psycho-educational testing and school consultation, family therapy approaches, and evaluation/intervention for youth on the Autism Spectrum. The University of Michigan provides a rich and exciting scholarly environment with frequent seminars, invited lectures, and opportunities for interaction with faculty across disciplines and departments.
