University of California, San Francisco, CA, USA - 1 Neuropsychology Postdoctoral Fellowship

The Memory and Aging Center (MAC) is now accepting applications for our Neuropsychology Postdoctoral Fellowship for the 2012-2014 training period. We are currently recruiting for one position, and have a preference for applicants invested in actively pursuing research during their Fellowship. The Neuropsychology Postdoctoral Training Program is a two-year program designed to provide research and clinical training in neuropsychology in a behavioral neurology setting. The Fellowship program provides trainees with experiences required to meet eligibility requirements for the ABPP Diploma in Clinical Neuropsychology through the ABCN. Most postdoctoral fellows divide their time between research, clinical, didactic, and administrative activities, although the program is flexible enough to adapt to each individual trainee’s needs.

Setting: The MAC sees over 1000 new patients per year and follows 2000 patients annually through clinic, a NIH-funded Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, a NIH-funded Program Project Grant on frontotemporal dementia and related disorders, and over 60 other funded projects. Postdoctoral fellows receive extensive clinical training carrying out brief neuropsychological evaluations in a multi-disciplinary setting and are exposed to a broad spectrum of neurological disorders, including Alzheimer’s disease, behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia, primary progressive aphasia, and atypical parkinsonian disorders (e.g., Lewy Body dementia, progressive supranuclear palsy, corticobasal syndrome). Cases are reviewed in detail at multi-disciplinary clinical case conferences. Although the primary focus of the MAC is aging and neurodegenerative disease, an optional clinical rotation is available in a general neuropsychological assessment clinic (Department of Psychiatry), in addition to one’s primary duties. Please refer to our website (memory.ucsf.edu) for a more comprehensive description of the MAC.

Training: Didactic training includes: weekly neuropsychology seminar, MAC journal club, and neurology grand rounds; monthly Huntington’s disease teaching case conference, frontotemporal dementia case/family conferences, clinical-pathological case conferences, and several other UCSF seminars of potential interest. Postdoctoral fellows are also invited to provide supervision for pre-doctoral neuropsychology trainees rotating through the MAC.

Research Opportunities: Research conducted through the MAC utilizes clinical assessments, experimental paradigms gleaned from neuroscience and psychology, functional and structural neuroimaging, gene expression studies, and proteomics. This diverse clinical and research environment gives trainees a broad exposure to current research relevant to academic and clinical neuropsychology. An extensive research infrastructure provides statistical and database support and considerable access to well-characterized patient populations and a large normal aging cohort. Trainees have the opportunity to work collaboratively within established research studies or carry out individually-initiated research.

Stipend and Benefits: The stipend is based on NIH guidelines (first-year currently at $38,496). Benefits include health insurance and 24 paid vacation days: http://graduate.ucsf.edu/postdoctoral/postdoctoral-scholars-salary-and-benefits.

Application process: Candidates must have completed all requirements for their doctoral degree prior to beginning the residency. Our program will NOT be participating in the APPCN Resident Matching Program. Applicants are asked to provide a CV, a one-page description of their research interests and three letters of support prior to being considered for an interview. These materials are due no later than January 3rd, 2012. After review of the applications, suitable candidates will be invited to interview with members of the training program and learn more about the clinical and research environment at UCSF. Interviews will take place in Montreal at the International Neuropsychological Society Meeting. Materials should be sent by email to Dr. Joel Kramer, PsyD: jkramer@memory.ucsf.edu. UCSF in an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
