University of Washington School of Medicine, Seattle, Washington, USA - 2 Clinical Rehabilitation Psychology Postdoctoral Fellowships

Settings Harborview Medical Center and the University of Washington Medical Center treat patients from the surrounding urban community as well as a 5-state region. Fellows work with a diverse array of patients from many cultural, socioeconomic, religious, and national backgrounds. The most common types of patients served include those with traumatic brain injuries, cerebral vascular accidents, spinal cord injuries, severe burn injuries, chronic disease such as multiple sclerosis, physical traumas such as those occurring after motor vehicle accidents, and acute and chronic pain. In addition, one of the fellowships focuses on medically underserved outpatient populations (HIV/AIDS, minority children, burns, and acquired disabilities). Fellows provide psychological care as part of a multidisciplinary team in the following settings: Inpatient Rehabilitation Units, Outpatient Rehabilitation Clinics, Rehabilitation Psychology Consultation and Liaison Service, Inpatient Burn Unit, Outpatient Burn Clinic, Outpatient Pediatric Clinic and an HIV/AIDS Outpatient Clinic. Candidates with a background in Rehabilitation/Health/Pain and/or Neuropsychology are encouraged to apply. This is the only fellowship program in the country accredited in Rehabilitation Psychology by the American Psychological Association.

Training Experiences: Fellows receive advanced training and experience in brief interventions and psychotherapy; consultation and liaison to various medical, surgical and intensive care units; focused clinical assessment as well as personality, cognitive and neuropsychological assessment; and effective communication and leadership in a multidisciplinary environment. The training program makes issues of cultural and individual diversity a priority. This is achieved through direct patient contact, co-therapy, supervision, and didactic training through fellowship seminars. Postdoctoral fellows are encouraged to attend regional and national meetings relevant to their specialty areas and are given time off work to attend a national meeting (if desired). Training activities include: 1. Rehabilitation Specific Seminars- Seminars are offered throughout the training year to fellows and interns on such topics as Motivational Interviewing, Pain Management, Hypnosis, ASA exam for spinal cord injury classification, sexuality & disability, TBIs, etc. 2. Internship Seminars & Professional Development—Fellows can attend weekly intern seminars for special or interested topics, as well as receive support on supervision, licensure & ABRP processes, and entering the job market. 3. Applied clinical work—Including assessment, brief interventions, consultation-liaison work, psychotherapy, and personality, cognitive, and neuropsychological assessment. 4. Individual supervision—A minimum of 2 hours per week for the entire year. 5. Group supervision—One hour per week for entire training year. 6. Journal club—Once per month. 7. Ethics Forums, Psychiatry Grand Rounds, Brain Cuttings, and other training opportunities through the School of Medicine. 8. Research Time—Fellows are provided with a minimum of one half-day a week to develop and pursue a research project and have opportunities to work with a research mentor. 9. Supervision of residents and classroom teaching are also part of the responsibilities. Program Goals & Objectives The goal of the Rehabilitation Psychology Postdoctoral Fellowship is to assist the development of advanced competencies in rehabilitation psychology settings. This training program provides didactic and clinic experiences in accordance with the American Psychological Association (APA) Division 22 – Rehabilitation Psychology training guidelines sufficient for board certification and independent practice.
