The Harvard Partners Consortium in Clinical Neuropsychology, Boston, MA, USA - 1 Postdoctoral felloship in Neuropsychology

Seeking candidates for a 2 year fellowship in Neuropsychology, to begin on September 4, 2012. The joint BWH/MGH fellowship is a program of Harvard Medical School. Three fellowship slots are available. Clinical experience will consist of adult neurological cases including dementia, epilepsy, brain tumor, developmental syndromes, neurobehavioral disorders, MS, and other degenerative conditions. At one of the sites (MGH), the fellow will receive training in both pediatric and adult cases. The clinical experience will be primarily outpatient based but will include some inpatient consultation. Specialized experience will be offered in the epilepsy surgery program including Wada Tests and intraoperative cortical mapping.

A required portion of the fellowship will be research activity through a proposed project or via participation with faculty in ongoing research projects. Didactic opportunities abound at both settings. The training experience is enriched by a highly collaborative teaching environment in which the fellow will work closely with neuropsychologists, behavioral neurologists, psychiatrists, and others with a special interest in brain and behavior. The Division of Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine at Children’s Hospital Boston is offering a Postdoctoral Fellowship in Sexual Orientation and Health Disparities Research for social scientists and social epidemiologists with a special interest in obesity and weight-related behaviors. Applicants for the postdoctoral position must have a doctoral degree in epidemiology, social and behavioral sciences (e.g., public health, sociology, psychology), or related fields. The focus of the postdoctoral research will be on the study of sexual orientation and health disparities primarily using data from three U.S. longitudinal cohort studies of adolescents and young adults: Growing Up Today Study I and II and the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health). In addition, the postdoctoral fellow will participate in grant writing and development of new projects and may carry out related analyses using data from other cohort studies.

It is expected that the fellow will apply for additional funding in the first year. Fellowship candidates must have extensive experience conducting statistical analyses with large databases using SAS. Supervision & Evaluation: As Director of the residency, Greg Lamberty, Ph.D., ABPP-CN will serve as a primary supervisor and mentor for the resident. Clinical Activities: The resident will conduct neuropsychological evaluation of patients presenting with diverse cognitive, psychological, and behavioral dysfunction associated with various neurologic and psychiatric conditions. Training opportunities are available within the following settings: Mental Health Service Line (MHSL) – The MHSL provides outpatient and inpatient neuropsychological consultation services for a wide-range of referral sources, including neurology, psychiatry, physiatry, primary care, social work, and various other entities throughout the VA system. Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Center (GRECC) – The Minneapolis VAMC GRECC is one of several national centers that provide unique integration of clinical services and research outcome data among aging veterans. The GRECC conducts ongoing research related to Alzheimer's disease and other dementias, and information collected as part of routine clinical evaluations is entered into a database for ongoing research. Polytrauma Center – Evaluations are conducted with both veterans and active duty service members who are undergoing comprehensive acute inpatient rehabilitation for known/suspected brain injury in addition to other musculoskeletal and organ system trauma(s). Geropsychiatry– The Geropsychiatry Team provides psychiatric and neuropsychological assessment to elderly veterans, ages 65 and older. There is opportunity to conduct comprehensive neuropsychological and psychiatric evaluations of outpatients and to provide inpatient consultation. Spinal Cord Injury & Disorder Center (SCI/D) – The SCI/D provides a full range of clinical services for veterans with spinal cord injuries and other conditions such as multiple sclerosis, Guillain Barre, Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS), ventilator needs, and co-morbid traumatic brain injury. Neuropsychological assessment with inpatients and outpatients is necessary to assist with rehabilitation and discharge planning and cognitive rehabilitation. Research Activities: The resident will participate in research and/or other scholarly academic activity related to neuropsychology either through collaboration with ongoing research programs or through independent research projects approved by the program supervisor, mentors, and training committee. This project should culminate in the submission of such work for professional presentation or publication. Didactics/Educational Enrichment: The resident will have opportunity to participate in various didactic and educational seminars at Minneapolis VAMC and University of Minnesota that will complement clinical and research activities, and support development as a board-eligible clinical neuropsychologist. Didactics include Psychiatry Rounds, Neurology Rounds, Neuropsychology Case Conference, Brain Cutting, Neuroanatomy Course, and 'Brown Bag' meetings that allow for informal discussion among trainees and staff on various topics relevant to the practice of psychology. UCSD Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is announcing post-doctoral fellowship opportunities for 2012-2013. The Fellowship is a 12 month, full-time position. The stipend is $40,000 plus university benefits. The Fellowship begins August 20, 2012 and ends August 19, 2013. The Fellowship provides advanced clinical training and involves supervised experience working as an integral member of a team of clinicians serving almost 30,000 diverse undergraduate and graduate students. Responsibilities include, provision of short-term counseling/psychotherapy, group therapy, intake and assessment, and crisis and urgent care. Children’s Hospital and Medical Center of Akron, Akron, OH, USA - 2 postdoctoral fellowship in clinical pediatric neuropsychology

The Division of Neurobehavioral Health within the NeuroDevelopmental Science Center (NDSC) at Children’s Hospital and Medical Center of Akron will be recruiting up to two positions in a two-year fellowship program in clinical pediatric neuropsychology. The program has made application to be a new member of the Association of Postdoctoral Programs in Clinical Neuropsychology (APPCN) and conforms to the INS, Division 40, and Houston Conference guidelines for training in clinical neuropsychology. We currently have 2 faculty neuropsychologists, one who is board certified in Clinical Neuropsychology (ABPP), with the goal of recruiting at least two more board-certified or board-eligible neuropsychologists within the next year. Fellows receive broad clinical training with diverse neurologic, psychiatric, and neurodevelopmental populations of all ages from infancy to young adults, and clinical rotations are flexible.

All fellows participate in a variety of didactic activities including a case conferences, Neuroanatomy review course, and Behavioral Neuroscience seminar, teaching/supervision of interns and graduate students, and contribution to or initiation of research programs under the mentorship of faculty. Research programs (most of them grant supported) are ongoing in the following areas: neurobehavioral disorders, traumatic brain injury, headaches, ADHD treatment, neonatal follow-up, and epilepsy. Rotations in other medical clinics such as Pediatric Neurosurgery Clinic, Pediatric Neurology Clinic, EEG Clinic, Neurogenetics Clinic, and Neuroradiology Clinic may also be arranged as individual candidate interests dictate. The Department of Psychology, seeks applicants for a 2-year, full-time combined clinical and research pediatric neuropsychology fellowship. Experiences are designed to meet INS-Division 40, Houston Conference and ABPP preparation guidelines. Percentage time devoted to clinical and research activities is negotiable; participation in research is a central component of training. Neuropsychological assessment, consultation and intervention in pediatric oncology, sickle cell disease and HIV/AIDS constitute the clinical experience. These clinical populations present with a wide-range of cognitive difficulties (related to primary diagnosis and/or treatment) including problems in the areas of attention, executive functioning, memory, visuospatial reasoning, sensory/motor functioning and psychosocial adjustment that afford fellows with broad-based training. Minor placements are available at neighboring hospitals for individuals interested in typical learning disability/ADHD, adult or forensic assessments. To foster a developmental lifespan perspective, training in adult and geriatric neuropsychology is integrated into the didactic curriculum. Children’s Hospital of New Orleans, an acute tertiary hospital, is proud to offer a postdoctoral fellowship in pediatric neuropsychology for 2012-2014. The training program is modeled on the guidelines set forth by the Houston Conference on Specialty Education and Training in Clinical Neuropsychology and the Association of Postdoctoral Programs in Clinical Neuropsychology. It is designed to train fellows to an advanced level of competence in pediatric neuropsychological assessment and intervention, consistent with independent practice in a tertiary health care setting, and is specifically geared toward producing independent practitioner level professionals to work within a hospital-based practice.

Setting: Children's Hospital is in beautiful Uptown New Orleans. The Psychology Department includes medical psychologists, who have the authority to administer and prescribe medications, as well as the traditional specialties of pediatric neuropsychology, and clinical/health psychology. The department includes 8 psychologists, two of whom are double boarded in neuropsychology and four are Medical “prescribing” Psychology. Most hold academic appointments in the Department of Pediatrics or Neurology through Tulane or LSU.

The neuropsychology fellowship builds competency in the assessment and treatment of children (newborn to adult) with a wide variety of neurological and developmental disorders. Upon completion of the two-year, full-time program, participants will gain clinical skills required for independent practice and to pursue board certification specific to pediatric neuropsychology (ABPdN). Primary clinical and research areas include: Neuropsychological functioning secondary to disease process or trauma, neurorehabilitation, endocrinology, oncology, gastroenterology (feeding and functional abdominal pain), and pediatric. Fellows are required to participate in and/or develop research topics and are encouraged to present at national meetings. Opportunities for collaborate case studies are regularly available. Neuropsychology fellows are encouraged to consider advanced training in psychopharmacology to enhance their appreciation of medication effects and disease processes on neurocognitive functioning. Primary Rotations The areas of training consist of assessment of acquired brain injury; inpatient/outpatient epilepsy, including video-EEG monitoring, cortical mapping and epilepsy surgery; movement disorders clinic; inpatient neuropsychological consultation; and outpatient evaluations. The Department enjoys collegial relationships throughout the hospital, allowing our fellows the option of participating in formal and informal didactics across specialties. The fellow is also expected to attend and present in Neurology Grand Rounds and the Journal Club.

Salary and Benefits Because New Orleans is considered a high need area for mental and medical health specialists and the demographics of our patients, fellows may qualify for federal tuition reimbursement programs. There have also been periodic incentive programs for licensed clinicians, which may be applicable to second year fellows. The goal of the postdoctoral fellowship is to provide trainees the breadth of knowledge and specific skills to become board-certified clinical neuropsychologists. Distribution of effort will be 60% clinical, 20% didactic, and 20% research/program development. The fellowship consists of two year-long major rotations in geriatrics/dementia and polytrauma/cognitive rehabilitation. University of Pittsburgh Medical Center Sports Concussion Program, Pittsburgh, PA, USA - 1 Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Sports Neuropsychology

This is a 2 year position under the clinical direction of Michael W. Collins, Ph.D. The UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program is involved in concussion management at all levels of sports participation, including professional, collegiate, high school, and recreational. The program is housed within Orthopaedic Surgery and is based within the UPMC Center for Sports Medicine, one of the largest sports medicine facilities in the country. The program continues to expand since its introduction in 2000 and there are now 5 full-time attending Clinical Neuropsychologists, as well as many other medical healthcare practitioners, forming an interdisciplinary management and treatment approach for sports concussion.

The volume of patient referrals is high and extensive programmatic research is occurring within our program. Duties will primarily consist of brief and extended neuropsychological evaluations of child and adult athletes with sports and recreation-related concussion. We are recruiting for an immediate opening. This specialty training position combines advanced clinical experience within a rehabilitation setting and an opportunity for supervising and training psychology graduate students and interns. The fellow will participate in a variety of clinical didactics offered within the Psychiatry and Rehabilitation Medicine Departments and within the medical center. VA Northern California Health Care System, Martinez and Oakland, CA, USA - 1 Psychology Post Doctoral Fellowship with Emphasis in Integrated Care and Behavioral Medicine

The fellow will be engaged in multiple activities in both the Oakland and Martinez VA Primary Care settings. Both settings provide behavioral health services fully integrated into primary care but the models of integration are distinct, providing the fellow with exposure to different care models. In both settings, the fellow will be involved in providing both same-day access to mental health services for veterans seen in Primary Care and specialized behavioral medicine interventions that are critical to the mission of prevention, health promotion, and chronic disease management. The fellow will function on a variety of interprofessional teams in a variety of specific roles.
Specific activities include:
• Behavioral health consultation according to the Co-located, Collaborative Care Model. • Provision of same-day/as needed access to mental health assessment and treatment services for veterans in Primary Care. • Consultation to primary care providers and other specialists related to management of behavioral health concerns in a medical setting, chronic disease management, and utilization of behavior change strategies related to improving medical outcomes. • Implementation of evidence-based/supported individual intervention practices, such as CBT, ACT, Motivational Interviewing, and skills based approaches (e.g., stress management, pain management) targeting behavior change to promote physical and mental health. • Co-facilitation of interdisciplinary group programs for chronic health conditions, such as diabetes, chronic pain, smoking cessation, and the MOVE! weight management program. • Participation in the Codisciplinary Pain Clinic, a twice-monthly interprofessional assessment and intervention setting staffed by a Pain Medicine physician, a physical therapist, and a Behavioral Medicine psychologist. Same-day co-assessments are also conducted with the Pain Medicine physician on request. • Psychosocial assessments for transplant (e.g., lung, kidney, liver, stem-cell) and bariatric surgery. • Psychoeducational lectures to specific groups of care providers and patients (e.g., stress management education for patients with diabetes, managing PTSD in a medical setting for nurses). • Collaboration and consultation with a variety of other disciplines related to implementation and evaluation associated with the Patient Aligned Care Teams. • Development of an independent quantitative project related to improving clinical care, such as implementation and evaluation of a clinical program, interdisciplinary trainings, development of a treatment manual, etc.

Location: The primary training sites for the fellowship program are in Oakland and Martinez, two communities in the East Bay region of the San Francisco Bay Area. The Bay Area offers a vast array of world class cultural and recreational opportunities, comfortable weather, and a rich multicultural environment. Northern California is home to Yosemite National Park, Lake Tahoe, the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, Pacific beaches, and the wine country of Sonoma and Napa Counties.

POSTDOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP IN NEUROPSYCHOLOGY VA MARYLAND HEALTH CARE SYSTEM

Program Description: The Veterans Affairs Maryland Health Care System (VAMHCS) is pleased to announce recruitment for two postdoctoral fellowship positions in Clinical Neuropsychology. The goal of the postdoctoral fellowship is to provide trainees the breadth of knowledge and specific skills to become board-certified clinical neuropsychologists. Distribution of effort will be 60% clinical, 20% didactic, and 20% research/program development. The fellowship consists of two year-long major rotations in geriatrics/dementia and polytrauma/cognitive rehabilitation. Throughout the training experience, fellows will also evaluate patients through the consultation-liaison outpatient neuropsychology clinic, ensuring exposure to a wide range of patient populations. Didactics consist of a monthly neuropsychology seminar, a bi-monthly neuropsychology journal club, Neurology Grand Rounds, and a weekly 2-hour neuropsychology video teleconference with other VA/DoD training sites, comprised of a case presentation and discussion of neuropsychology-specific readings. Fellows will receive individual and group supervision on a weekly basis, and will likely have the opportunity to supervise practicum students. Our staff is active in research and opportunities to become involved in ongoing research are abundant.

Setting: A large VA Medical Center with multiple specialized programs (GRECC, MIRECC, VA Research Centers of Excellence, Polytrauma Support Clinic Team) and a strong relationship with the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

Training Model and Philosophy: Our program adheres to the scientist-practitioner model. The process and the content of clinical training strive to teach the developing neuropsychologist to apply scientific method and knowledge (based on research, VA clinical practice guidelines, and expert consensus) to the assessment and treatment of patients with conditions that affect central nervous system functioning. Staff: The VAMHCS has 57 psychologists on staff with various areas of practice specialty. The faculty for this fellowship will be drawn primarily from the Neuropsychology Service. Our Service is comprised of 6 neuropsychologists, 2 postdoctoral fellows, 2 predoctoral interns, up to 3 graduate student externs, a psychology technician, and a research assistant.

Dr. James Cantor of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH; Toronto, Canada) is seeking applicants for a two-year, full-time Postdoctoral Research Fellowship. The Fellow will participate in neuropsychological and psychological assessment of persons with paraphilias, atypical sexual interests, or histories of sexual offending. The Fellow will participate in on-going projects and develop and conduct projects of the Fellow’s own. Existing databases are available for retrospective data analyses, and opportunities are available for establishing new research protocols for implementation in the Kurt Freund Laboratory for phallometry. The Fellowship is ideal for those seeking research opportunities and experience in sexology, forensic psychology, assessment, or applied neuropsychology.

The CIHR-funded 12-month stipend is $40,000 (Canadian; $40,388 U.S.), plus a conference allowance for both years of the Fellowship. Clinical experience and supervision can be arranged for recent doctorates seeking to fulfill the requirements for psychology licensure in Ontario (called “registration” by the College of Psychologists of Ontario). The neuropsychology program is designed to be consistent with recommendations of the 1997 Houston Conference for Training in Clinical Neuropsychology. These overall training goals are consistent with our program’s and the VA’s mission to provide training and research opportunities which further the quality clinical care of veterans with these important needs. In pursuit of its primary goal, the training program is designed such that six primary objectives are pursued. Specifically, journeyperson level proficiency is expected in each of 6 primary areas of competency: 1) neuropsychological assessment, 2) psychotherapeutic interventions, 3) consultation/ supervision/teaching, 4) professional and ethical behavior, 5) diversity issues, and 6) scholarly inquiry and critical, empirically-based evaluation of clinical and research activities.
  • Research Opportunities: The program emphasizes both clinical activity and research/ supervision training. Research activities will be accomplished within existing clinical research programs, with the expectation that the resident will co-author at least one paper/poster during their two year tenure. Research opportunities are available in: the neuropsychology of dementias and traumatic brain injury, aging, TBI outcomes, test development and test construction, and personality factors related to pain outcomes, among others.
